Pilates Mat vs Yoga Mat: What's the Difference

A pilates mat vs yoga mat guide: how a folding maple-and-leather pilates mat differs from a PU or cork yoga mat, why the materials differ, and how to choose.

On our site there are two different mats that are easy to confuse by name: the Pilates fold mat and the yoga mat. They are built from different materials, so the choice depends on what the mat is for.

The Yoga Mat

A yoga mat has a PU or cork top over a natural rubber base. It is offered in a range of thicknesses and in standard or custom shapes, and it is the mat used for yoga practice and general studio work.

The Pilates Fold Mat

The Pilates fold mat is a different product: a maple wood base with a microfiber leather surface, made to fold, with carry straps. At 203 x 60 x 4.5 cm it is built as a foldable mat rather than a rolled one.

Why the Materials Differ

The two mats use different surfaces because they are used differently. The yoga mat is built on a rollable rubber base; the Pilates fold mat is built on a folding maple wood base with a leather-look surface. That is why one rolls and the other folds.

How to Choose

Choose the yoga mat when you want a PU or cork mat that rolls and comes in a choice of thicknesses and shapes. Choose the Pilates fold mat when you want a folding maple-and-microfiber-leather mat with carry straps. Both can carry your branding — logo, colour and custom options — for a brand, studio or wholesaler.
