Cork vs PU Yoga Mat: Which Surface to Choose

A cork vs PU yoga mat guide: how the two top surfaces differ, what each one is bonded to, and how to choose between cork and PU for your studio or brand.

Our mats come with two different top surfaces: cork and PU. Both sit on a natural rubber base, so the choice is really about the surface you practise on.

The Two Tops

A cork mat has a natural cork top bonded to a natural rubber base. A PU mat has a matte PU top over the same kind of rubber base. Underneath, the construction is the same — what changes is the surface.

Cork: A Natural Top

The cork surface is made from natural cork, and it gives a non-slip grip in both wet and dry conditions. It is fade-resistant, so it keeps its look through frequent use.

PU: A Matte, Print-Friendly Top

The PU surface is matte, and it stays non-slip when it is wet or dry. It is also where colour, pattern and a printed or laser engraved logo sit — a PU face is fade-resistant and wear-resistant, so the printed or laser engraved logo is applied to the PU surface.

How to Choose

If you want a natural material on top, choose cork. If you want a mat that carries your own colour, pattern or logo, choose PU, because the logo and pattern go on the PU surface. Both are available at 4.5mm or 5mm, and both come with a natural rubber base for grip.
