Why a Matte Yoga Mat Surface Lasts Longer

A matte yoga mat surface and a standard glossy PU face share the same non-slip rubber base. What differs is the top: colour fastness, and how it cleans.

Two yoga mats overlapping at an angle on a pale surface, showing yoga mat surface texture: one beige face that is smooth and even, one dark green face in a fine dense grain, with a white mat edge between them
If you compare two of our yoga mats and the only thing you change is the surface, the question that follows is a fair one: why does the matte one hold up longer? The answer is in the surface.

The Base Is the Same on Both

Start with what does not change. Both mats are built on a non-slip rubber base. The underside is the same on each, so the grip against the floor is not what separates them.
That leaves the top. Everything that follows is about the two surfaces, and about how the top holds colour and handles marks over time.

What a Standard PU Surface Does Differently

A standard PU surface has a glossy finish.
Colour on it is held to standard colour fastness. That is the ordinary level.
The part that matters later is cleaning. On a glossy face, a stain left in place for a long time is difficult to clean.

What the Matte Yoga Mat Surface Changes

The matte face is built differently in two ways. First, coir fibre is added to it. Second, it goes through an upgraded colour-fixing process rather than the standard one.
The matte yoga mat surface also has stronger colour fastness, set by the upgraded colour-fixing step.

Why the Matte Surface Is More Durable

The matte face is the more durable of the two.
On colour: the matte face holds its colour more firmly, where the standard PU face is held to the ordinary level.
On care: the matte face is easy to clean.

The Two Faces in the Photo

The cover photo shows the two surfaces close up: a smooth beige face beside a dark green face covered in a fine dense grain. The white line between them is the side of a mat.

Choosing a Yoga Mat Surface

If you want a glossy finish, specify the standard PU face. If you want the surface that holds its colour and is easier to clean, specify the matte yoga mat surface.
Both are built on the same non-slip rubber base, so the choice is about the top your mat is finished with.
