Yoga Mat Thickness Guide: How to Pick 2mm to 5mm

A yoga mat thickness guide: what 2mm, 4mm, 4.5mm and 5mm feel like, what else thickness affects, and how to choose the right thickness for your studio or brand.

PU yoga mat shown for thickness and colour options
On a yoga mat, thickness is one of the specifications a buyer chooses. Our PU mats come at 2mm, 4mm, 4.5mm and 5mm, and our cork mats at 4.5mm and 5mm, so the choice comes down to what the mat is for.

Thinner Mats (2mm, 4mm)

A thinner mat sits closer to the floor. At 2mm the mat is the closest to the ground; at 4mm there is a little more material between you and the floor than at 2mm.

Mid and Thicker Mats (4.5mm, 5mm)

At 4.5mm and 5mm there is more material between you and the floor than at the thinner sizes. 4.5mm is the thickness most often ordered for our PU and cork mats.

What Else Thickness Affects

Thickness is one of the specifications a buyer sets on an order, alongside colour and pattern. For a studio or a brand ordering a set, matching the thickness across the order keeps the mats consistent.

Choosing for a Brand or Studio

For a brand, the practical route is to set one thickness for the range and keep it consistent, then vary the colour and pattern. Our PU mats can be produced at 2mm, 4mm, 4.5mm or 5mm, and our cork mats at 4.5mm or 5mm, on a natural rubber base.
